Biography of Raymond Chua

Mr Raymond Chua Seng-Chye, began his interest in photography during his school days in the 70's. However, it was only from 1979 that he really began actively winning awards and getting recognition for his works, both in the local and international arena.

As of today, Mr Raymond Chua has held many solo exhibitions of his works in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), East Malaysia (Sabah), China (Guizhou); including one locally themed stage photography titled "Dance Impression" held in conjunction with the Singapore Dance Festival in 1987.

With Mr Raymond Chua's experience as Chairman of the SAFRA Photographic Club for two terms from 1991/92 and 1992/93, he is currently the technical advisor to various prestigious photographic societies including Singapore Colour Photographic Society, SAFRA Photographic Club, Macpherson CC Photographic Club, Kampong Glam CC Photography Club, Johore Photographer Alliance and the Photographic Society of Johore, Malaysia.

Believing in promoting photography arts, Mr Raymond Chua has contributed as a judge to both local and international photographic competitions. His current contributions include expanding his field in nature, travel and digital photography through talks and workshops. 

Hoping to add to his list of contributions as well as to ensure fair judgement of the winners of the upcoming Singapore Young Photographers Convention 2013, the SYPC committee has recruited Mr Raymond Chua to help judge the winning pics for our convention.

Revealing Judge #2

As a fashion and advertising photographer, UKay has worked on a wide range of projects with international fashion brands, magazines, and clients from all over Asia and Europe, such as Guerlain Paris, Chanel, Loewe, Burberry, Harpers Bazaar, Prestige, and SingaporeBrides amongst others. His corporate clients include Singapore Parliament House, Ministry of Manpower, NTUC, Accor Hotels, Meritus Hotels and Resorts, and Macau Tourism Board.

The Singapore Young Photographers Convention committee is proud to host the multi-award winning Singapore Master Photographer of 2008 with his wide array of experience with famous clients such as Espirit, Fuji Film, Razer Gaming and Chanel as the second of our three key judges in the convention coming up in August.

Revealing Judge #1


With more than 30 years of experience in both indoor and outdoor photography, Mr David Tan is now working a dream job at the Singapore Zoological Garden as a wildlife photographer

The SAFRA Photographer of the year 1996 overall winner has had his works exhibited at prestigious exhibitions locally and internationally such as the 1998 SAFRA photo exhibition themed "Alternative" held at the Singapore Art Museum and the Italian UGO MULAS Photography Museum photo exhibition.

Given the honour to be appointed as the principal photographer for the book, “Birds seen at the Istana”, commissioned by then-President of the Republic of Singapore, Mr. S.R. Nathan, Mr David Tan shares his valuable experience as a guest speaker at the Singapore Art Museum, various photography clubs, community clubs, National Parks and schools island wide.

Mr David Tan has worked with various local organizations including the National Parks Board, Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, SPH Magazine, The Yomiuri Shimbun, NTUC Media Co-operative, National University of Singapore, and the Singapore Science Centre to carry out assignments.

With Mr David Tan's photos having been made popular in books, calendars and other educational materials, we have chosen him as one of our three key judges for the Singapore Young Photographers Convention.

Event Day Run Through

Participants can expect to be competing in a team-based photo competition as well as a photography workshop conducted by our keynote speaker. The convention aims to forge a more cohesive community for youth photographers to collate, share and learn beneficial information useful in their various photography journeys.

During the competition highlight, participant pairs will be joined into teams of 4 and work together towards providing a portfolio of 4 pictures (one from each member of the group) based on a theme revealed on the day itself. Following the deadline for submission, our panel of judges will select the top three portfolios based on how the teams have interpreted the theme to facilitiate a basis of flow, composition, arrangement, and other similar elements through the images. 

Participants will also be attending a captivating talk given by our renowned photographer-speaker, sharing insights on his experience as a professional.
Registration opens on the 3rd August 2013 where participants are encouraged to arrive at 7.30am with their respective indemnity forms signed.

Rules and Regulations


Terms and Conditions

1. Participants must be aged between 13 and 20.

2. Each participant must be a Singapore Citizen, a Permanent Resident or a foreign student currently studying and residing in Singapore.

3. Each participant must be a student in a local government or independent school, or MOE-recognised International School.

4. Each participant must submit the indemnity form upon registration on the event date. Students without an indemnity form will not be allowed to participate.

5. Participants must use a digital camera during the competition. The resolution of the camera should be a minimum of 3 Megapixels or more. Camera phones are not allowed.

6. Storage formats accepted are CF/SD/MMC/XD/SM/MS. Participants using other formats must supply their own relevant adaptors/drives, which are USB-compatible.

7. Participants can use any form of transport at their own expense during the competition. However, they must stay within Singapore and their group.

8. Each group must comprise 4 members.

9. Participants must register online, stating the name of their partner in the registration form. Random pairs of participants will be grouped together to form a group of four. In the case of a solo registration, the organizing committee will arrange for the participants to be in a group of four.

10. Please arrange for a replacement in the event that a registered participant is unable to attend the convention. This would ensure smooth running of the event.

11. All digital photographs submitted must be new and original and must be taken during the course of the competition. Entries composed must be original, authentic and unpublished material. Participants, who submit images that were shot at an earlier time, or shot by proxies, will be disqualified. The 1-free-print offer provided will be used to print submitted photos in exchange for completed survey forms which will be given to each participant upon registration on the day itself.

12. Photos may be edited with any photo-editing software for minor touch-ups which do not distort the photograph (at most cropping).

13. Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and NYAA reserve the right to keep, publish and distribute the photos submitted for the SYPC.

14. The organisers are not responsible for any lost, late, misdirected or incomplete entries.

15. The organisers reserve the right to change the terms, rules, regulations and criteria of the SYPC at any time.

16. The organisers will not be liable for any damage or injuries that accompany or result from your participation in this event.

About the SYPC 2013

The Singapore Young Photographers Convention aims to host a convention where budding young photographers from educational institutions island wide may collate and share, exchange or pit their skills with one another in hopes that every participant leaves the convention as a better photographer. The main highlight of the Singapore Young Photographers Convention this year is a theme based photo competition with attractive prizes to be won alongside a workshop of talks and photo critiques given by our renowned keynote speakers with veteran level experience in various genres of photography. We will be looking forward to your participation in this convention on the 3rd of August 2013!
